Empowerment Suite

We eventually got round to taking some photo’s at one of our projects which was completed last year. The Holistic Birthing Centre in Northwich, Cheshire was a conversion of a very tired and run down GP premises, which was originally a Victorian house. The Birth Centre is run by a team of Independent Midwives, who provide private maternity care to clients in the Northwest.

The midwives philosophy is one of belief in low-tech, woman centred care for clients and their families, and therefore the brief was specific in ensuring the building felt warm and homely as well as complying with the latest clinical and infection control requirements, without appearing too hospital-like.

This is one of only a handful of private Birth Centres in the country, and as such required registration with the Care Quality Commission. We worked alongside the midwives during the consultation and inspection phases, until registration was achieved.

It was a very interesting and enjoyable project for me to work on, both on a professional and personal level, and is a subject which I would like to research more into and develop a greater understanding of. I have since attended a birth room design workshop day, and have commenced some related reading and research.

We’d relish the opportunity to design another one…..
Check out the Birth Centre website.
