P R O J E C T Designing a home for the next chapt P R O J E C T

Designing a home for the next chapter.

Each new project begins with understanding the people who will live there.

For this family home in Caldy, the brief wasn’t simply to remodel the house, but to create a layout that felt balanced, connected and ready for the years ahead.

Our design process began with an in-depth Design Workshop in the client’s home, where ideas were explored together through hand-drawn sketches. Those conversations shaped the design, from rethinking the flow between spaces to carefully balancing the needs of every member of the household.

The result is a home that retains its character while providing flexible family spaces, a new second-floor master suite, and a stronger connection between the house and its garden.

A language of timber

Some places are defined as much by their materials as by their landscape.

Around the Atlantic coast, timber is used consistently across buildings and public spaces; from weathered shingles and screening to carefully detailed boardwalks that guide visitors through fragile dune landscapes.

The individual details are simple, but repeated thoughtfully they create an architectural language that feels entirely at home in its setting.

Good architecture isn’t only about individual buildings. Sometimes it’s the careful repetition of simple details that creates a sense of place.

Reimagining a coastal bungalow

Every project starts with understanding what’s already there.

This long-established bungalow in Milford-on-Sea has been part of its surroundings for many years. Rather than beginning with a blank sheet, we looked for the qualities that gave it character and allowed those to guide the design. The original chimney remains the anchor for a contemporary family home, thoughtfully reimagined for the future.

Notes from the Costa Brava

Small details often tell us more about a place than its landmarks.

Over several visits to the Costa Brava, we’ve collected photographs of doors, tiles, ironwork and architectural details that caught our eye.

They’re reminders that good design often lives in the everyday things we pass by without noticing.

Reimagining a Family Home

Every project starts with understanding how a home is used today and how it could work better tomorrow.

For this Victorian property, our Stage 1 design session explored a number of ways to reconfigure the ground floor, creating better connections between the existing house, garden and everyday family life.

Sometimes the best solution isn’t the first one. Exploring alternatives helps uncover opportunities that aren’t always obvious at the outset.

Notes from Hilbre

The islands are shaped by geology, weather and time.

Weathered stone, coastal vegetation, changing light and long views across the estuary all contribute to a strong sense of place.

Observing landscapes like this reminds us that character is often the result of gradual change rather than a single intervention.

New project instructed, so a measure up today was good to get done.
Our client wants to maximise the views to the river, so we’re going back to the office to draw up and look at some design options!

Here’s one we went to visit today.
We spent an hour or so with the owners to get a feel for the property and chat about their thoughts and ideas.
We advised that a feasibility study, looking at design options would be the best way forward, followed by a pre-app enquiry submitted to the Planning Authority to gauge their thoughts on any proposals.

Everyone loves a ‘before and after’, so here’s one Everyone loves a ‘before and after’, so here’s one of ours.
We visited this morning to meet Building Control for their final inspection and sign off, so took these ‘after’ photos.
Sometimes a simple and sensitive approach to refurbishment is required and that’s exactly what we did here. The location is wonderful, and the stone cottage its self is beautiful, so the refurbishment was undertaken in a way to preserve the existing features and sympathetically restore where needed.

A visit this morning to one of our completed proje A visit this morning to one of our completed projects, to take some photos.
This project was to create an open plan family kitchen area, which opened out to the garden. We also gave them a utility space and some bike storage incorporated into their layout.
A typical late Victorian/early Edwardian property, meant that the original layout to the rear of the property was made up of smaller spaces; kitchen, scullery, pantry etc, with little visual link to the rear garden.
Modern family living has changed somewhat to the way Victorian and Edwardian families would have used our houses.
A layout change, with a rear extension has transformed their house into a bright and contemporary home for their busy active family.
These clients are repeat clients, having designed their loft conversion for them some years ago to provide them with a home office and additional bedroom spaces, it was lovely to be asked again to work on their beautiful house to transform the ground floor for them too.

It’s always really interesting to work on historic It’s always really interesting to work on historical or listed buildings. When we work through a design and prepare information for a Planning Application or Listed Building Consent, we undertake historical research on properties to write a supporting document or a heritage statement as part of the application. We sometimes look at old maps as part of this research, so we can see how buildings and surrounding areas have developed over time. Here are a few I’ve been using today of Storeton, Wirral.
